Nyan Cat is the internet's happiest hallucination: an 8-bit cat with a Pop-Tart body flying through space on a rainbow, looping forever to a song made of one syllable.

Origin

The GIF was drawn in April 2011 by artist Chris Torres, who blended his cat Marty with a Pop-Tart on a livestream dare. Days later a YouTube upload married the animation to a Japanese vocal-synth song built entirely from “nya”, and the fusion became unstoppable — one of YouTube's most-viewed videos of 2011.

Rise

Nyan Cat defined the era when memes became endurance sports: ten-hour loop videos, contests over how long viewers could survive the song, and endless national remixes. A decade later it made history again — in February 2021 Torres sold a remastered Nyan Cat as an NFT for around 300 ETH (roughly six hundred thousand dollars at the time), one of the sales that ignited the 2021 NFT boom and proved original meme creators could finally get paid.

Connections
