Stonks is the patron image of confident financial incompetence: Meme Man — a bald 3D head in a suit — standing before an orange arrow, captioned with the deliberately misspelled word that now means “the market, but as a joke.”

Origin

The image is credited to the surreal-meme community, surfacing around 2017 via the Facebook page Special Meme Fresh. The misspelling is the entire thesis: finance as understood by someone who has absolutely no idea what they are doing, and is doing it anyway.

Rise

Stonks graduated from surreal shitpost to global vocabulary during the 2019–2021 retail-trading boom, becoming the official crest of the GameStop saga in January 2021 — when the word appeared in headlines, congressional coverage and network news chyrons. “Stonks only go up” is now the eternal prayer of every bull market, uttered with a precision-calibrated mix of irony and belief.
