SBF

Character: SBF · Origin year: 2019 · Tier: Core

SBF — Sam Bankman-Fried — is crypto's great cautionary tale: the frizzy-haired wunderkind in cargo shorts who built the FTX exchange into a giant, preached effective altruism from beanbag chairs, and presided over one of the largest financial collapses in history.

Origin

Bankman-Fried founded the trading firm Alameda Research in 2017 and the FTX exchange in 2019, cultivating the image of the sloppy genius — playing video games during funding calls, sleeping at the office, promising to give it all away.

Rise

At his 2021–2022 peak, SBF was the face of respectable crypto: stadium naming rights, Super Bowl ads, celebrity endorsements, congressional testimony. In November 2022 the empire imploded in days when the gap between FTX and customer funds was exposed; the collapse vaporized billions, dragged the whole market into winter, and turned his every old tweet into dramatic irony. He was convicted of fraud in 2023 and sentenced to 25 years in 2024. The meme canon — the hair, the shorts, the apology threads — is now a permanent unit of measure: every suspicious founder is “giving SBF vibes.”

Connections

SBF's eternal foil is CZ, whose tweets lit the fuse of FTX's bank run. He shares the Vault's cautionary wing with Rugger and Paper Hands — and, in cosmic irony, the collapse he caused was the soil from which Solana's Bonk-led meme revival grew.

In BomberMeme

SBF fights as a rare B-tier Wildcard of the Vault — genesis skin index 23 — bursting into (other people's) money on elimination. In BomberMeme's transparent on-chain economy, he serves as the permanent reminder of why the receipts live on Solana now.
