Harambe was a western lowland gorilla whose death in 2016 triggered one of the strangest cycles in internet history — genuine grief metabolized into absurdist myth, until a zoo gorilla became a saint of the early meme-finance age.

Origin

Harambe lived at the Cincinnati Zoo, where he was shot in May 2016 after a small child fell into his enclosure — a decision that ignited global debate about zoos, parenting and animal rights.

Rise

Mourning turned surreal within weeks: petitions, vigils, “Dicks Out for Harambe”, write-in votes in the 2016 US election, and the insistence — half joke, half liturgy — that his death broke the timeline and everything since has been the wrong reality. Harambe became shorthand for the moment irony and sincerity fused permanently. Crypto later adopted him as a patron martyr, with tribute tokens and enduring “died for our sins” iconography.
