FUD

FUD — Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt — is the art of winning without arguing: flood the zone with dread and let hesitation do the rest. It is one of the few roster members with a documented corporate career predating the internet itself.

Origin

The term dates back to 1970s computing culture, famously associated with critiques of IBM sales tactics — the strategy of making buyers too nervous to choose a competitor. It survived decades of tech-industry warfare before crypto adopted it and made it a household acronym.

Rise

In crypto, FUD became both a weapon and a shield. Negative news is FUD; skeptical questions are FUD; sometimes actual documented problems are dismissed as FUD, which is where the word gets dangerous. "FUD" and its counterpart accusation "shilling" form the twin null-arguments of crypto discourse — each side declaring the other's information a psyop. The acronym's genius is that it names a real manipulation tactic while also providing cover for ignoring real warnings.
